⚠️ CRITICAL — Read Before You Order: Proximity Sensor Replacement Disables Face ID

Replacing the proximity sensor flex cable will permanently disable Face ID and True Tone on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. This is a hardware pairing restriction built into every iPhone 14 Pro Max — it is not repairable without Apple's proprietary System Configuration tools.

The proximity sensor module is cryptographically paired to the device's logic board at the factory. Swapping it — even with an identical PULL-A original Apple component — breaks that pairing. Apple service centres cannot restore it either without their internal software.

    ❌ Proximity Sensor Replacement

Face ID permanently disabled. True Tone permanently disabled. Passcode continues to work normally.

    ✅ Flash Module Replacement

Face ID NOT affected. True Tone NOT affected. Safe to replace flash without any biometric impact.

This part is sold for professional repair technicians who understand these limitations. Order only if you accept that Face ID will no longer function after a proximity sensor swap.

🔩 What is PULL-A Grade? Why It Matters for This Repair

Not all iPhone parts are equal. The grade determines where the component came from and how reliable it will be after installation.

    🏆 PULL-A — What You're Getting

Original Apple components removed from working or lightly damaged devices. PULL-A means the part was tested for full functionality before removal. Minimal cosmetic wear. These are the same sensors that left the Apple factory — not copies.

    📦 OEM Copy / Aftermarket

Manufactured to Apple's dimensions but not made by Apple or its certified suppliers. Quality varies widely — some work well, others cause calibration issues or shorter life. Not what this listing sells.

    ⚠️ Refurbished / PULL-B

Pulled from damaged devices, repaired or tested with lower standards. Higher failure risk. Not what this listing sells. For a precision sensor component, grade matters.

This listing: PULL-A OEM — original Apple proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, and camera flash flex cable — pulled from a functional device, pre-tested for functionality, ready to install.

🔧 What's in This Flex Cable Assembly

Three functions are integrated into one flex cable assembly on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. This listing covers all three components.

    📡 Proximity Sensor (UDPS)

Detects when the phone is held near the ear during a call and turns the screen off. On the 14 Pro Max, this is an Under-Display Proximity Sensor (UDPS) built beneath the Dynamic Island — different from older notch-based designs. More sensitive to installation position than previous models.

    ☀️ Ambient Light Sensor

Measures the brightness of the surrounding environment and adjusts the screen brightness automatically. Part of the same flex assembly. When this fails, auto-brightness stops responding and the screen stays at a fixed level regardless of lighting conditions.

    💡 Camera Flash Module

Controls the LED flash used for photos, video recording light, and the flashlight. The flash module is on the same flex cable but does NOT carry the proximity sensor pairing — replacing only the flash module does not affect Face ID or True Tone. No micro-soldering is required.

    🛠️ Faults This Assembly Repairs

Four distinct faults can trace back to this one flex cable. Know which one applies before ordering.

📞 Screen Stays On During Calls

The proximity sensor has stopped detecting when the phone is near the ear. The screen does not turn off and the cheek triggers buttons mid-call. A faulty or dislodged UDPS module is the cause in most cases.

🖤 Screen Stays Black After Calls

The opposite fault — the proximity sensor gets stuck in a detected state. The phone thinks it is still near the ear and keeps the screen off after a call ends. Power button wakes it, but the fault recurs.

    🌓 Auto-Brightness Not Responding

Screen brightness stays fixed — too bright indoors or too dim outdoors — regardless of the surrounding light level. The ambient light sensor has failed or disconnected. First rule out Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Auto-Brightness toggle.

    📸 Camera Flash Not Working

The LED flash fails in the Camera app, video recording, or the flashlight. If the torch icon is greyed out or the flash fires inconsistently, the flash module on this flex cable is likely at fault. Replacing the flash does not affect Face ID.

📱 iPhone 14 Pro Max Uses Under-Display Proximity Sensor (UDPS) — Important for Technicians

Unlike earlier models that mounted the proximity sensor visibly in the notch, the iPhone 14 Pro Max integrates an Under-Display Proximity Sensor (UDPS) beneath the Dynamic Island. The infrared light transmits through active display pixels — an entirely different approach.

⚠️ The UDPS is more sensitive to installation position than notch-based sensors. Calibration may be required after replacement.

⚠️ Any obstruction between the display panel and the sensor housing will cause partial or complete proximity detection failure after reassembly.

ℹ️ The flash module sits in a separate position and does not transmit through the display. Installation is more straightforward and does not require calibration.

    ❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Will replacing the proximity sensor disable Face ID?+

Yes — permanently. The proximity sensor is cryptographically paired to the iPhone 14 Pro Max logic board at the factory. Replacing it with any other component, even an identical PULL-A original Apple part, breaks that pairing.

After replacement, Face ID will no longer function and True Tone will also be lost. The passcode lock continues to work normally.

This is not fixable after the fact. Apple's proprietary System Configuration software is the only tool that can re-pair sensors — it is not available outside Apple service centres.

Does replacing the flash module also disable Face ID?+

No. The flash module is on the same flex cable assembly but is not part of the Face ID pairing system. Replacing the flash LED module does not affect Face ID or True Tone.

If the only fault is a non-working flashlight or camera flash, replacing the flash section is the safer repair — no biometric functionality is at risk.

No micro-soldering is required for the flash module replacement.

What is PULL-A grade and why is it better than aftermarket?+

PULL-A means the component was removed from a working or lightly used iPhone 14 Pro Max device. It is an original Apple part — not a copy, not a replica.

PULL-A grade specifically means the part was tested for full functionality before removal and shows minimal wear. It is the highest quality of pulled component.

Aftermarket parts are manufactured to Apple's dimensions but by third-party factories. Proximity sensors and ambient light sensors are particularly prone to calibration issues when aftermarket — PULL-A originals perform more reliably in this position.

What is an Under-Display Proximity Sensor (UDPS)?+

Starting with the iPhone 14 Pro series, Apple moved the proximity sensor under the display. Infrared light transmits through the active display pixels themselves rather than through a dedicated notch cutout.

This makes the sensor position more sensitive during installation. Any obstruction — dust, a misaligned gasket, debris — between the sensor housing and the display panel can cause proximity detection failure even with a functional new part.

Technicians working on this repair should ensure the sensor seating area is clean and that the flex cable is routed correctly before reassembly.

My screen stays on during calls — is it definitely the proximity sensor?+

Not always. Before ordering a replacement part, rule out software causes first. Go to Settings → General → Reset → Reset All Settings. This can resolve proximity sensor faults caused by iOS bugs without opening the device.

Also check if a thick screen protector is covering the Dynamic Island area — this can block the under-display sensor and cause exactly this symptom.

If the fault persists after a software reset and with no screen protector obstructing the sensor area, a hardware replacement is the next step.

My auto-brightness is not working — is this the same flex cable?+

Yes. The ambient light sensor is part of this same flex cable assembly. When it fails, auto-brightness stops responding to environmental light changes.

First confirm auto-brightness is enabled: Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Auto-Brightness. Toggle it off, then on again. Also check if the Dynamic Island area is being obstructed by a case or screen protector edge.

If it remains unresponsive after those checks, the ambient light sensor in this assembly is the likely fault.

    Is professional installation required?+

Professional installation is strongly recommended. The iPhone 14 Pro Max uses strong adhesive bonding and requires heat to soften the display seal. Precision screwdrivers, spudgers, and tweezers are needed.

The UDPS position is more sensitive to installation accuracy than older notch-based sensors. Misalignment during reassembly can cause the same fault you started with — even with a working new part installed.

Flash module replacement is more straightforward than proximity sensor replacement. Both require opening the device. If you are not confident, bring the part to a local repair shop along with this part.

Does this part come with a warranty?+

No. This is a hardware repair part sold as-is for professional or advanced DIY use. No manufacturer warranty is included.

Every component is pre-tested for functionality before shipping. Australian Consumer Law protections apply to all purchases from JPC Mobile.

If the part arrives damaged or not as described, contact us at 0480 039 913 or visit Shop 3A, Forest Lake QLD.

What tools are needed to install this part?+

You will need a Phillips precision screwdriver set, pentalobe screwdrivers (for the bottom screws), plastic spudgers, prying tools, fine-point tweezers, and a heat source (heat gun or hair dryer) to soften the display adhesive.

A suction cup or opening pick is also required to separate the display from the chassis. A magnetic mat helps keep small screws organised.

JPC Mobile stocks professional iPhone repair tool kits. Visit the repair tools collection or ask in store at Shop 3A, Forest Lake QLD.

How long does the repair take?+

Flash module only: 30–45 minutes for an experienced technician. Proximity sensor only: 45–90 minutes. Combined replacement: 60–120 minutes.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max uses strong adhesive bonding on the display. Allow time for the heat process to work properly — rushing this step is the most common cause of cracked display glass during DIY repairs.

Calibration testing after proximity sensor replacement may add additional time to verify sensor detection is functioning correctly at the correct distance.
