What does VHB stand for and what makes it different?+
VHB stands for Very High Bond. It is 3M's premium adhesive tape product line. Unlike a standard transfer tape, VHB has a solid acrylic foam carrier between the two adhesive faces. This foam absorbs vibration, fills surface gaps, and conforms to curved surfaces. Bond strength is significantly higher than any standard double sided tape.
Is 10mm the right width for phone screen repair?+
Yes. The 10mm width fits most modern smartphone bezel frames. It is the most popular VHB size for phone repair. A single phone screen uses under 30cm of tape when applied around the perimeter. One 25m roll covers over 80 phone screen repairs.
Can VHB tape really replace screws?+
On most smooth, non-porous surfaces, yes. 3M VHB generates more shear and peel strength per cmยฒ than a standard screw on many substrates. Car manufacturers use VHB to bond body panels and exterior trim in production. It is not suitable for load-bearing structural applications, but for surface mounting, bonding, and trim attachment it outperforms mechanical fasteners in many cases.

Yes. VHB is the industry standard for automotive trim attachment. It handles engine heat, road vibration, and weather exposure. Use it for badge mounting, side skirt bonding, door moulding, and spoiler edges. Clean the paint surface with IPA before applying and press firmly. Allow 24 hours before washing the car.
Can I use VHB to hang mirrors and shelves at home?+
Yes. VHB is widely used for no-drill home mounting. It holds bathroom accessories, cable raceways, tile edge strips, and lightweight mirrors on walls and tiles. Surface must be clean and smooth. On painted plaster walls, use multiple strips for extra holding strength. Wait 24 hours before loading.
Is VHB tape suitable for outdoor and marine use?+
Yes. Clear 3M VHB tape is waterproof and UV stable. It does not yellow or lose bond strength with outdoor sun exposure. It is used on boat trim, outdoor signage, solar panel micro-rail mounting, and navigation equipment mounting. For full submersion, a marine-specific sealant may be needed in addition.
How is VHB different from the 3M clear transfer tape?+
The 3M clear transfer tape is ultra-thin with no carrier โ just adhesive on a release liner. It is for precision bonding on flat, smooth surfaces where thin profile matters. VHB has a foam core that is much thicker. It fills gaps, absorbs vibration, and handles heavier loads. Use transfer tape for device bezels and craft work. Use VHB for automotive, signage, solar, and mounting applications.
Can VHB tape be removed once it is applied?+
VHB is a permanent adhesive and is designed to not release. Removal is possible using dental floss or a thin nylon cord to slice through the foam, followed by IPA to remove adhesive residue. This may still damage paint or soft surfaces. Plan placement carefully before pressing. Do not use VHB where removal will be needed.

What surfaces does VHB NOT bond well to?+
VHB struggles on rough, chalky, porous, or low surface energy (LSE) plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene. It also performs poorly on dusty, oily, or wet surfaces. Always clean with IPA first. For LSE plastics, a 3M adhesion promoter primer can help. Concrete, rough brick, and untreated timber are not ideal substrates without additional surface preparation.
